Welcome
to San Diego State University. Every classified graduate
student admitted into the Electrical and Computer Engineering
at San Diego State University can obtain an MS degree
by following two options:
Plan
A: Thesis Option
Students
selecting Plan A must complete 21 units of course
work (7 courses), 6 units of EE 797 "Research" under
supervision of a full - time EE faculty, and 3
units of EE 799A "Thesis". A completed thesis
in a required format shall be submitted to the
department and the university. Normally, an oral
defense of the thesis is required. Credit for
797 will be given only after completing a thesis.
The student
will choose one core course, 3 courses from depth
area, one course in each of two breadth area and
one elective course.

Plan B: Non - Thesis Option
Student selecting Plan B must complete 30 units of
course work (10 courses) and must pass a written
comprehensive examination.The sutdent will choose
one core course, three courses from the depth
area, at least two courses in each of the two
breadth areas, with the remaining courses as
electives.EE 797 cannot be used as one of the
courses required for graduation.
In
case of
a change
from Plan
A to
Plan
B, the
research
credits taken
under Plan
A will
not be
counted
towards
course
requirements
for Plan
B.The student
is required
to take the
additional
courses as
required
in Plan
B.
- Comprehensive
Examination
The written
comprehensive
examination
tests the students
understanding
and mastery
of fundamental
principles
and their ability
to apply them
to engineering
problems. Members
of the ECE
faculty will
grade the comprehensive
examination
for technical
correctness,
completeness,
and clarity
of expression.
After two unsuccessful
attempts,the
student may
not take the
examination
again without
written permissions
from the department
chair. The
chair, at this
time, may require
the student
to successfully
complete certain
additional
courses before
taking the
comprehensive
examination
a third and
final time.
