Lab Coordinator: Jay Harris

Students enrolled in VLSI Design, Advanced VLSI Design, Computer Networks, Microprocessor Design, Advanced Microprocessor Design, and Digital Systems use the E-220 computer facility.

The laboratory contains 44 SunRay 1 "thin-client" terminals connected to a Sun Ultra Enterprise 4000 server. Two Cisco 2900XL Ethernet switches provide switched interconnect between each client and server. Engineering software available on the server includes Matlab 6 with Simulink, Opnet Modeler, Opnet ITGURU, Mentor Graphics' EDA Tools, Synopsys Design Tools, Xilinx ISE 5.1, Altera Design tools and the Agilent Advanced Design System (ADS). Matlab 6, Simulink and its associated toolboxes are used for mathematical computation, analysis, visualization, and algorithm development. Opnet Modeler is a network modeling and simulation tool that is used by students to design network equipment, communication protocols and networked systems. Students learning how to diagnose application performance problems and analyze changes to computer and network infrastructure use ITGURU. The Mentor Graphics design suite of EDA tools includes software for IC design and verification, analog/mixed signal, custom IC design, high capacity circuit simulation, extraction, physical verification and manufacturability, physical optimization, place and route, resolution enhancement technologies, and static timing analysis. The Synopsys Design tools provide software for IC design synthesis, design planning, physical implementation, extraction, verification and mask synthesis. Xilinx ISE and the Altera Design Tools are software applications that allow students to design, synthesize and verify FPGAs. The ADS RF Design Environment is a software design platform for large-scale RF/mixed signal ICs.
